2010 – the International Year of Biodiversity

The United Nations (UN) has pointed out 2010 as the International Year of Biodiversity. Everywhere, biodiversity decreases, and it is mainly because humans expand their area use. It is on high time biodiversity is given priority. Its importance has not yet gained the same acknowledgement as the climate issue has. People forget how dependent they are on the very system that is the basis of our existance.

Part of the problem lies in the fact that nature has way too low economic value. Even when we understand the importance of maintaining biodiversity, we fail. We build garages and balconies near our houses, roads in our forests and harbours along our coastlines. Since each is such a small event, it is difficult to see that it contributes to a harmful development.

This year, we should focus on biodiversity. The UN asks persons, institutions and organizations to contribute. Explain why and how we should govern natural areas and plan our area use, in order to maintain biodiversity. Learn, think, ask, write and inform others about biodiversity this year!
